Dear ________________,

Please endorse an end to marijuana prohibition. The U.S. Conference of Mayors has declared the war on drugs a failure and said “states and localities should be able to set whatever marijuana policies work best to improve the public safety and health of their communities.”

I believe such a policy should be the control of marijuana in a regulated, legal environment. Unfortunately, while other states move forward, Annapolis lawmakers take baby steps. The decriminalization law they passed is considered one of the weakest of the 19 similar laws nationally.

As a local elected official, you see firsthand how marijuana prohibition feeds an underground market largely controlled by gangs and organized crime, destroys lives, compromises public safety, contributes to racial profiling, and criminalizes people for a behavior a majority of Marylanders believe should be legal. Please speak up for an end to marijuana prohibition!

The Maryland Cannabis Policy Coalition launched a Local Lawmakers Against Prohibition campaign. Please add your name as an endorser:

If you have any questions, please contact the ACLU of Maryland’s Sara Love at or the Marijuana Policy Project’s Kate M. Bell at

I look forward to hearing your position on this important matter.
